Since Jan 1st, China has allowed a couple to have two children, leaving behind its previous policy that limited most Chinese couples to one child, which has aroused a heated debate among the public.

In my opinion, the two-child policy should be carried out. To begin with, the change is meant to promote the population structure and deal with the problem of an ageing society. More old people may result in shortage of labor force. The new policy will slow down this decrease in the working population and hopefully continue China’s economic growth. Meanwhile, it will also lead to more spending on the second child, thus contributing to economic growth. On the other hand, if a family has two children, they two can share the burden of taking care of their parents and thus the sense of happiness will be stronger.

All in all, the two-child policy is beneficial for both family and country in the long run.

Dear Sue,

I’m Li Hua, one of your students in China. It’s almost a month since you left us. We all miss you and are very grateful for what you did for us.

We are busy as usual. We had an English speech contest the other day. I won the first prize! This again reminds me of all your kind help. Do you still remember the trees we planted together on the hill behind the school? Yesterday, we went there and watered them. The tree you planted yourself is growing well, and the whole class decided to name it Sue Wood. Will you come back to see Sue Wood?

How is everything with you lately? We hope to know more about you and your American students. Hope to keep in close touch.

All the best.

Yours,

Li Hua

What's wrong with Them? Take a look at the road conditions of today. Quite a few pedestrians and cyclists behave as if there were no traffic rules at all. They cross roads anywhere as they like, even though there are zebra-crossings just a few yards away. Some even put themselves at risk taking short cuts by climbing dividers in the middle of roads. Many drivers act like F1 racers on the highways. They drive at considerable speeds without care. They usually speed through zebra-crossings, even when pedestrians are there. When there is a red light at an intersection, pedestrians or cyclists never tend to pause or stop. They all forget where they are. Sometimes there are some crazy people driving on the roads without driving licenses, or worse, drink and drive, which can make the road into a bloody battle field. Why do such things happen? In my opinion, it is just due to their lack of moral duty that people ignore various traffic rules, road safety, or even the lives of others. This leads to their bad and reckless behavior, which makes the traffic conditions go from bad to worse. It is believed t hat something should be done to improve the whole situation. Then road safety won't be a problem and traffic conditions won't be a bother to us anymore.

Directions:For this part you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic A Boom in Adult Education. You should write no less than 150 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

A Boom in Adult Education

Every Tuesday and Friday evening sees Miss Li,my neighbor and a secretary in a company rush home after a hard day’s work, gulp down her meals and then hurry out to catch the bus for her English class. Miss Li’s case is not unique, and now more and more city adults spend their leisure time trying to improve themselves at school or college.

There are a number of reasons for people to go back for their education. Some people, like Miss Li,are doing it to acquire another degree or diploma to impress the society. To them more knowledge,or rather, more credentials means more opportunities for better jobs and quicker promotion.

Other people, especially those who are laid off or out of employment go to vocational school to prepare to return to the job market. They are eager for new skills so that they can be qualified for the jobs in retail trade, administration, education and other service categories to which they are strange because most of them were blue-collar workers in the factory.

There are also people who come to take such courses as Chinese traditional medicine, painting, calligraphy and photography. As their working weeks decline people begin to have time to fulfill their old dream of their heart’s desire.

Out of necessity or out of interest, people go back to school for the common goal——to improve themselves, and this boom in adult education,in turn, helps to raise the intellectual standard of the whole country.

In this picture, we can see two men cutting earth in tunnels, hoping to find some diamonds. One makes great efforts in his work. After a long time without gains, he decides to give up, feeling disappointed. But in fact he is very close to success. With one or two more attempts of cutting, he would have seen those diamonds right in front of him. However, the other one is still cutting and he is more likely to succeed.

This story tells us a very simple but important piece of truth: we should be confident in what we have chosen to do and never stop our effort until we succeed.

Just like the diamonds in the picture, success is just waiting for my last efforts.

Protect the TreesEach year, people burn or cut down 143,000 square kilometers (55,000 square miles) of the forest. People who burn or cut down trees do it for different reasons: farmers cut down trees in order to get more fertilize lands to grow rice or vegetables, and use the woods as fuel. Timber companies cut down trees and turn them into furniture or paper productions. As to goal miners, they remove the forests to find out whether there are goal underground.

However, many of us fail to realize that forests are the lungs of the earth. When we cut down trees, we also push ourselves in to a dangerous situation. That is the global warming. When you come to think about it, there are only few ways to solve these negative effects: stop cutting down trees blindly; try to find some clear energy that can replace oil and coal. But these solutions can be impractical to some degreed.

Why trees can be so important to the whole nature? First of all, trees are the habitat of many animals. When we cut down trees, we not only destroy animals’ habitats but also ourselves. We just gradually destroy natural links. The result is that many spices of animals and plants are dying out. Secondly, cutting down trees cause global warming, to some degree. Naturalists compare forest to human’s lungs. The forests absorb the carbon dioxide and other gas that cause global warming, and then give off the oxygen that good for the human beings and other living creatures. It’s refreshed the air as well as reduced the noise. If the air quality is bad, people may die from cancers, or the new diseases for which they have no immunity. Forests also play an important role in the prevention of natural disasters. Warmer temperatures cause water to expand and also create more water by melting polar ice caps. That’s to say, the nations which near the ocean may have been flooded by the water. But the forests can prevent water loss and soil erosion, and cool off the global temperatures. It’s the key to keep the balance of the nature.

Sometimes people only care about money making; they don’t care about the price we pay for the pollution. When the disaster is around the corner, we may be afraid and frustrated. The earth, on which our economies have always been based, is suddenly threatening our existence. All we hope that is this overpopulated, over industrialized planet can carry on for a longer time. And maybe, it’s time for us to realize that we should protect the earth, stop cutting down trees blindly and madly.

Last summer holiday, I took a trip to Yunnan. It is in the southern part of our country is really a very beautiful place grand mountains, clean rivers and kind people. Trees and flowers are seen everywhere. Every year there are lots and lots of visitors.

Maybe you have heard about Shi Lin . There are all kinds of strange stones. Some of the small stones look like graceful girls; and the big stones look like handsome men. Other stones look like cats, peafowls, double-edged swords, mice, elephants and so on. Of all the stones, the stone like a beautiful girl in a legend is the most famous name is A Shima.

I also went to Li Jiang. The roads in that city are just like the Eight Diagrams. Any road in the city goes to the center of Li Jiang. A river runs through the whole city. If you go along the river, youll never get lost. There are many ethnic minority people in Yunnan. They are very cordial. And they all like singing and dancing. We danced with them around the campfire that night. I really had a good time.

I like the elephants and fruits there best. An elephant is even taller than me! I even mounted the elephant, though I was very afraid at first. But the elephant seemed very friendly. I took some photos with it. The fruits there are very fresh and delicious. They are very good for our health.

The trip to Yunnan impressed me greatly. I will never forget it.
